sponge vase by marcel wanders

An organic shape like a natural sponge is a very difficult shape to achieve in porcelain using traditional molds. so marcel wanders developed a way to produce porcelains without them.
in this case, a natural sponge is taken and dipped in fluid porcelain clay. after drying, the porcelain impregnated dry sponge is cured in a regular ceramic oven. the sponge burns away, leaving a perfect copy of its fine shapes. in this way, marcel can create porcelains that are both industrially reproducible and individual, and which also show off the best that the porcelain maker's art has to offer.
